Brimfield - Random Thoughts

What a great time Margaret and I had roaming the fields of Brimfield, Massachusetts last week!   Brimfield is a tiny town with a two-lane highway running  through it.  On either side of the highway are 21 fields which fill with about 6000 dealers three times a year.  Different fields open on different days.  The show officially starts on Tuesday, but upon arrival Monday afternoon we learned that there was great early shopping to be done in some areas.  Here you'll see random photos, most taken on the last day - the first sunny day we had. I'll share some finds in another post.  Monday thru Thursday we encountered rain.  Never exceedingly heavy, but the fields were muddy.  Comfort always trumps fashion at Brimfield, and with layers and rain gear, we were not deterred by the weather.
We made it for the opening of all the best fields.  Shows open anytime between 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
We were up between 4:00 and 5:30 every day to get into Brimfield to get in line early and to have good parking. (We made multiple trips back to our van each day to drop off purchases.)  Lines stretch for what seems like miles just before an opening.
The line for the J&J show on Friday is the most genteel.  Everyone is polite.  In some of the fields it's a mad rush and we learned how to get in quickly without getting caught up in that, (after a horrible experience last year!)
Brimfield this year was a nice  mix of vintage and antiques.  We saw far more industrial items than we did last year.
Japanese buyers were plentiful.  Most often we saw them purchasing clothing and industrial items.
Pricing varies widely at Brimfield.  Some dealers had high-end show prices. If we stopped at a booth and saw only three digit numbers on the tags, we moved on.  There's plenty to be found at reasonable prices.
Styles are mixed.  One of the most frustrating things about Brimfield is that a large portion of the dealers do not tag their items at all.  With crowded booths, waiting to get the attention of the seller to ask a price can be very frustrating.
We didn't see a lot of common 'brown' furniture.  (You'll note that this booth had no one even looking at the merchandise.)  Most furnishings we saw being purchased were primitives or cool industrial pieces.
There were only a handful of dealers featuring white or Annie Sloan colors. Those booths did not appear to be very busy either. The farmhouse primitives with original finish seem to be more in demand at Brimfield.  (I think the Midwest may tire of white soon; we're always a bit behind the curve - but I reserve the right to be wrong!)
Because we flew in, we were limited to purchases of small items.  I think it would be terribly frustrating to be on the hunt for larger pieces at Brimfield.  Buying teams from Ralph Lauren, J Crew and others swoop in and grab the best items so fast that it makes your head spin. 'Sold' tags are slapped on big piles of stuff and off they go.
Old advertising is plentiful.  I loved this sign.
Displays are random...tables filled as things come out of the box.  You can't overlook a table like that; there can be treasures among the trivial.
At $1000, this little beauty was still available on Friday.
There were things on my list that I did not find, but in the end I shipped 200 lbs. of wonderful goodies and can't wait for all of my boxes to arrive this week.  My biggest regret was not meeting some of my Aussie buyers, Mike & Lizzie of Hobohemia.  Because I stooooopidly did not check my FB page for a couple of days, I missed connecting with them.  :(
Here's Margaret, as we were taking our last load of the week to Fed-Ex.  (A mini-van rental is essential if you plan to purchase much!)
Another Brimfield essential - stamina.  We walked 4 - 7 miles each day and then had to haul all of our finds into our hotel, pack 'em up and back out to Fed-Ex.  There are few places to rest at Brimfield;  it's difficult to find an empty table to sit down for a quick lunch.  Margaret was a perfect shopping partner; we work at that same pace and have different tastes so were not competing for the same items.  Can't wait to do it all again next year!

Grayslake This Weekend - Vintage Valentines & More

Good morning new Blogger dashboard.  Let's see if you feel more like cooperating when I use Chrome instead of Firefox.  (clicks 'preview'...so far so good!)   Remember to print this page off or pull it up on your phone for half price admission to the Grayslake Antique Market this weekend.
Today is load-up and head out to Grayslake day.  Of course I'll have tons of vintage Valentines; it's now or never people!
Those old heart-shaped candy boxes have plastic roses.  Quaint, eh?

I'm also bringing a bunch of letters like this because you just never know when you are going to need to hang your initial on the wall. That turquoise N is as tall as a small toddler!

Of course I've also put together my usual offbeat assortment of things to get you thinking.  I  have a couple of titles in mind for this grouping - what would you call it?

Now follow me on over to Common Ground for Vintage Inspiration Friday...that will get you thinking for sure!

See you at Grayslake!

Collector's Eye - Iowa

Collector's Eye and the Midwest Antique & Art Show occur together twice a year in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Midwest Antique Show showcases high-end dealers with museum quality primitives, art, advertising and furniture. My favorite sightings included some amazing trade signs. Wish I'd had a chance to get some photos.

The Collector's Eye is a more casual show, featuring a nice variety of mostly traditional antiques and collectibles. Mid-Century and Industrial items were spotted here and there but not in large quantities.

Things were hopping as the show opened, and slowed down in the afternoon. It was 70 degrees and sunny; I imagine that contributed to the quiet afternoon in a big way. Ginger and Garth stopped by and it was great to see them. (We met when I did the Mount Vernon show last year and they saved my bacon several times that weekend!)

Following are random unedited pics from our booth. Kathy and I are still in Iowa and looking forward to shopping our way home today...watch for a report later in the week. (Next post I'll tell you about my visit to the fascinating "Rabbit Hole" at Simply Iowa.)

Thanks to everyone that visited us at Collector's Eye!

Everything From Kitsch to Americana - Collector's Eye Show - Preview Part 2

"Sam" will be the official greeter in our booth at the Collector's Eye Show in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Sunday.  He's seven feet tall and a wonderful example of vintage Americana.  (I think I shared the story previously of my three year old granddaughter walking in and seeing him,  "Jesus!" she said. We told her he was "Uncle Sam" and for the rest of her visit she referred to him as "Sam", "Jesus" or "Sam-Jesus".  On her most recent visit she had his name right "Sam", "not Jesus...cause Jesus is God".
Sam's message this weekend: "buy American"....or better yet, "buy VINTAGE American goods".

Of course it wouldn't be right to have only serious merchandise in our booth...that's not how the sun shines in our world. There's gotta be room for a little silly fun.  How about this mid-century doll sofa?  It's got a little secret!

It's a hide-a-bed, suitable for a mid-size doll.  (Or five friendly couples.)  Is that not fun?  We think so, and so it's headed to Iowa as well.

Serious antiques, kitschy fun and everything in between...come see us in BOOTH #18!

Collector's Eye Show - Preview Part 1: Ephemera

Sunday: Collector's Eye Show in Cedar Rapids Iowa.  I've heard great things about this show but have never attended as a buyer or a seller.  I'm bringing a wide range of fun stuff including goodies from my huge stash of ephemera.   Here's a small sampling:
Luggage labels

Never opened 1960s flashcards

Early instructional books and 1860s hand-colored prints

 Menus, Victorian trade cards, photos

1860s copperplate maps

Foreign books

Sewing cards

French ephemera, 1850's - 1960's

Beatuiful paper from every era.
Will we see YOU at Collector's Eye?  Hope so!

P.S.  One of the things I'm looking forward to is shopping on the way home on Monday - if you have any great suggestions for me in a generally E/SE direction from Cedar Rapids, please sing out!

Debra at Common Ground hosts Vintage Inspiration Friday....we're linked - now let's all go check out all the participants, shall we?

Baraboo and Barrington Sneak Peek

It's was just past 8 a.m. and I ran out to pull items from the garage for the shows this weekend.  I was out there for all of 10 minutes...the sweat is dripping off my red face.  I don't do summer gracefully!  Kathy will be with me at both shows and of course you'll find our usual assortment of prims, shabby, industrial, ephemera, and just plain fun stuff.  Here are a few of the items that will be with me at Baraboo on Saturday or The Arboretum of S Barrington on Sunday.
The little white cabinet was a Door County find, as was the sweet round lunch pail. The old bucket is a favorite of mine - it's lived!
This small canvas-covered foot locker would look great as a base for your suitcase collection; but there's more than meets the eye here...
Faintly stenciled on the lid is 'Greenfield Police'.  This was an evidence collection kit; all the small parts are gone, leaving a perfect case to repurpose into a 'secret' office or artist kit.
There's a place to stash everything you might need  here, from pencils & brushes to paper & laptop.

We've got a small collection of farm-stand signs...
To remind you to eat fresh home-grown foods!
Hope to see YOU this weekend!

We're linking up with Faded Charm for White Wednesday.  Put on your sunscreen, grab a lemonade and follow me over to see the inspirational posts this week!
