The Kane County Flea Market - Would Love to Hear YOUR Opinion!

This year was my first at Kane and I participated in four shows there. My friend Kathy shared a booth with me this time and our location in Expo West was great. The building is light & spacious and sales were good.

At The Kane County Flea Market you'll find a great mix of primitives, industrial, and shabby treasures. You'll also find the dreaded beanies, t-shirts and cheap imports.  Countless customers at other shows have commented to me that they no longer shop Kane because there's too much new stuff.  From a shopper's perspective, I say just walk past what you don't like and you'll have more time to spend in booths like
The Frenchman's Wife...

Kane does have a different vibe than any of the other shows that we do.  The show opens at noon on Saturdays and this weekend traffic was steady but we never felt the type of "rush" that we get at other shows. (We don't have the established customer base at Kane that we do at other shows so that may account for the quiet start.)

Sundays at Kane just feel surreal.  Few shoppers arrive at 7:00 when the show opens and many dealers don't stroll in to open their booths until 9:00 or after.  It's one of those chicken/egg things. Do the customers not come because the dealers don't bother to show up, or do the dealers not come because they don't want to open for just a few potential sales?  Personally, if I've paid for a space I'm going to be there for every possible customer. A later show opening on Sundays might be warranted at Kane since the hardcore buyers probably come on Saturday.

Traffic was steady later on Sunday, but many times during the day it just felt like there was no energy in the building and people were plodding along. (A little background music in that hall would probably help a lot.)  One of the vendors that came in late on Sunday just packed up and left around noon.  An hour or so later another did the same.  If I were the promoter I wouldn't tolerate that and those folks wouldn't be welcomed back.

We appreciate each shopper that helped make our weekend a success.  If you shop at the Kane County Flea Market I'd love to hear your overall opinion of the market.  And if you sell there, likewise...we'd love to hear from you!

Kane County Flea Market and My Baditude

The needle on my attitude meter normally points to the positive but I'll confess that at Kane it leaned the wrong way for most of the weekend.  Perhaps it was my "neighborhood"; the soy candles nearby and imported shopping carts next to me. Or the guy on the other side selling t-shirts printed with code for a very crude phrase, which I listened to him explain all weekend. Or perhaps it was the lady early on that walked off in a huff when I wouldn't sell her two $12.00 items for $3.00.

At any rate, I've snapped out of it and am feeling cheery once again!  The show was a success overall and the good moments outweighed the bad; especially the visits from Terry, Marcy, (Haverford House), Suzzi, Polly, and the always encouraging Jeanine, (ChiPPy-SHaBBy!) and Candyce, (Altered Ever After).  Thank you all for the smiles you brought me!  It was also great to meet Sharon who owns "American Junk" in Lake Barrington, Illinois. I hope to visit her shop one day soon.

I didn't get a chance to get out and shop, but as I was leaving I ran into Anita & Judy, (Iowa Junk Gypsies), and  had a nice little chat.  One of these days I'm determined to shop their booth before all of their treasures are snapped up!

Driving home I had an unexpected "gift". Six hot air balloons were floating over the country side.  I altered my route until I ended up on a tiny country road and could stop to enjoy their beauty close up. It was a glorious sight.  I guess God knew just what I needed to turn my "baditude" into "gladitude" by the time I arrived home...it worked!

Kane County Flea Market - Update on Location

Arriving this morning at the Kane County Flea Market I was surprised to learn that I had been assigned to the Dairy shed. CJ again came along to help set up. Rain was pouring down when we arrived and the whole time we were setting up. The booth space was dry, but there was ankle-deep water in our parking space.

We had no choice but to take off our shoes and wade in to unload the van.  I only wish I had stopped to take a photo of the fiasco but it didn't seem all that humorous at the time.  I did snap this picture later; you can see the high-water mark on the tire.

By the time the show opened at noon, the rain had stopped and the crowd poured in.   Sales were brisk and we'll be bringing some fresh things in tomorrow to fill the empty spaces. Stop in and say hello if you come!

Kane County - 3 Weeks to Go - Sneak Peek

Gracie's Cottage will be selling at the Kane County Flea Market  for the first time on May 1st and 2nd. For the past fourteen years I've enjoyed seeking out treasures and sharing them with friends like you. Since leaving my day job late in 2008, (thank you Mr. Bad Economy),  it's been a pleasure to expand and try new venues.  My dear friend Kathy will be sharing space with me at Elkhorn and Junk Bonanza but I'll be flying solo this time.

Candy from Altered Ever After shared with me how much she's enjoyed selling at Kane County.  The Iowa Junk Gypsies, (whom I have yet to meet but have worshipped from afar), sell there as well.  I've started gathering things to take; here's a sneak peek:

Some of you know that we love letters and numbers and always try to have a nice selection to offer. The original calligraphy alphabets on waxy linen vellum are 'to die for'; you've got to see them in person to appreciate them.
We have a couple of terrific chippy garden urns, lots of galvanized goodies and these wonderful old fishing floats in unusual colors.
We'll bring dozens of great old feed, flour and sugar sacks, (both shabby & pristine), hardware and ephemera.  Hope to meet you there!
